Breeding
We believe, and others agree, that artificial breeding suits some but not all operations. It does suit Shannonbrooks philosophy, ideals and needs. It enables a small operator to monitor a herd at close hand and achieve relatively good calving rates. The main advantage is the impregnation of very good cows with exceptional semen without the cost of purchasing a bull and replacing him at regular intervals.
A study of bovine reproductive anatomy and physiology, heat detection, breeding stock selection, insemination technique, semen handling and storage and oestrus synchronization was made with Mr Greg Fawcett and the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries. This knowledge plus insight gleaned from local and overseas artificial breeders has made success more attainable. The valued assistance of our local veterinary surgeon, Mr. Peter Turley B.V.Sc adds hugely to our potential.
