Shannonbrook Pastoral Pty Ltd was accepted by the Santa Gertrudis breeders association as stud 2022 in 2006. Even though Frank Ashman (Director), had a late start into cattle breeding a keen eye has been kept on happenings during the period. Engineering operations are still active providing investment and development capital plus items of a mechanical or fabricated nature appear on the farm without fuss. Frank was an early owner of the famed Warwick Cattle Crush Company.
The property is in the Beaudesert area of Queensland with good rainfall but average soil. Santa Gertrudis is the breed of choice due to their versatility, adaptability, acceptance and a classification system which assures ‘pure bred is well bred’.
The object of the operation is to produce high quality beef animals in small numbers allowing other breeders in a niche area to source this quality and upgrade their breeding capabilities.
A genetic study of bovines assists to unravel the jigsaw but phenotype males and females are chosen on parental form and function as well. Outcrossing seems necessary to maintain a fresh supply of desirable genes and traits. This process assures healthier stronger animals with good conformation, type, muscle cover, growth rate, fat distribution, bone density, fertility, milk quality, mothering ability and genitalia correctness.
Shannonbrook applauds the efforts provided by the Department of Industries and Fisheries, M.L.A., genestar, participants in msa grading, tbts, beef crc and any organisation that works toward greater consumer acceptance of beef as a form of protein in an enjoyable, memorable form. Today’s industry cannot afford to get it wrong.
